Using all of the DIY projects from this year mixed in with a few quick new projects we create a total look that is pretty sweet!
Welcome to the Kingdom's Valentine's Party Flockers! For this years display We really wanted to do something that would remind you of an old school Valentine's Party like back when we were in elementary school. This also allowed me to try things I have never done before like making faux cake. I am pretty happy about how it all came together in the end.
Let them Eat Cake, Well Faux Cake...
I really knew I wanted a cake but I really had no clue as to where to even began. Luckily I have a few bakers in my friends circle, so I turned to them for advice and a few online sources also. After listening to all of the advice I decided to mix it all together and found an easy first try option. For this one I choose to start with a cardboard base and try my hand at the small details like the frosting on the edges and the writing on top. Faux cakes can get a fancy as a wedding cake or as simple as this heart cake. There is a full blog post on how to make one like this for yourself if you want to give it a try.
Sweets for my Sweet...
Faux cupcakes were pretty easy once I figured out how to open the tube of faux icing (caulk). After a little trial and error I finally got the hang of it. Pro-Tip, the trick to the icing is to hold the tube of caulk in one place and to turn the cupcake itself. I made two sizes of cupcakes and used the same techniques for both. Here is a link to the DIY for those.
it's just like candy...
Who knew that a little air-dry clay and brown spray paint would look so tasty. Although I didn't do a DIY for these it was super easy to do. All you need is a silicon ice tray, a block of air-dry clay and a can of spray paint. Just press the clay in the mold and let it dry for about 8 hours. Then flip it over and your clay candy should pop right out. Once it is out of the mold just let it dry overnight. Once dry just spray it with your paint and Ta-da, you just make faux chocolate! Here is the spread all laid out together. Doesn't it look good enough to eat!
Conversation Hearts really are Valentine's day in a box...
This idea came from something my mom taught me years ago. Growing up my mom made really cute topiary trees out of small square gift boxes. She called them topsy turvey topiary trees. I always thought they were so cool; so I figured I would make something like them but with hearts. I hit up a few of my favorite stores for supplies and got to work. Check out the DIY for these if you want to make some for your home.
My Funny Valentine (Card)...
This snazzy little white iridescent tree is made by National Tree Company, though the branches aren't really thick enough to hold much up due to the style of the branches it turned out to be a super cute little tree. I decorated this beauty up with some little DIY heart cookies and some vintage valentines I made last year with card stock,a printer and some glitter. Here are a few of my favorites.
Cupid draw back your bow...
This 22" tall cupid has all the look of that vintage valentine you might remember hanging on the wall of your childhood classroom. I made this oversize guy a few years ago using foam board, card stock, glitter, tinsel and a trusty printer. This is one project that I will probably pull out and use every year, this year he sits proudly on top of the tree.
Putz house wishes and rainbow tree dreams...
So if you didn't catch it.. that heading was a reference to the lifestyles of the rich and famous intro, "champagne wishes and caviar dreams." If I was that kind of rich I would build just what you see in the picture above. I mean who hasn't looked at a putz house and thought,
I WANT TO LIVE IN THIS HOUSE lol. I have already named my street, rainbow drive. Each house would be a different color and the address would be Red on Rainbow Drive and so on with the color of each house. Like hey man where do you live, Oh I live in Turquoise on Rainbow Drive. How dope would that be? I know this all has nothing to do with Valentine's Day but this is the top of my china cabinet and the rainbow trees mix in well with all of the rainbow hearts and things. I also filled the china cabinet with vintage pink black and blue Pyrex and vintage valentine cards and hearts.
